Sask Power owns and operates Island Falls Generating Station, located in northern Saskatchewan, at the end of a long and lonely dirt road 3 hours' drive northwest of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Geo-Foundations completed the construction of 107 post-tensioned multi-strand rock anchors and 228 passive rock dowels as part of a major renovation to the site's existing concrete infrastructure. The project site was comprised of two existing dams: Main Dam, adjacent to the Powerhouse and consisting of the spillway, ice sluice and under sluice; and A-Dam, the spillway control structure. The post-tensioned rock anchors varied in size from 4-strands to 19-strands, in drilled holes up to 40 metres deep. Work on the ogees of A- Dam had to be performed with temporary platforms and crane access for the drilling equipment. Customized drilling equipment was developed for drilling on Main Dam utilizing a track system for moving along rows of anchors and forklift-mounted drilling apparatus for working in tight quarters between building locations. Work commenced in 2010 and completed in 2011.
